Fix Common Screen Recording Issues

Screen recording is usually seamless, but browser permissions and system settings can sometimes get in the way. Here is how to fix the most common problems.

1. Black Screen on Chrome (MacOS)

If you record your screen and the result is just black, it is likely a macOS permission issue.

  • Open System Settings (or System Preferences).
  • Go to Privacy & Security > Screen Recording.
  • Find Google Chrome in the list and ensure the toggle is ON.
  • Restart Chrome for the changes to take effect.

2. No Audio Recorded

If your video is silent, check these two things:

Microphone Permissions: When you first visited GrabScreen, did you click "Block" on the permission popup? Click the lock icon in your address bar and reset permissions.

System Audio: Remember, to record computer sounds (Zoom calls, YouTube), you must select "Browser Tab" or "Entire Screen" and check the "Share system audio" box in the popup.

3. Webcam Not Showing

If your webcam light is on but the preview is black, another app might be using it. Close Zoom, Teams, or Skype and refresh the page.

If none of these work, try clearing your browser cache or switching to a different browser like Edge or Firefox to isolate the issue.

2. Choose What to Share

  • Window: Perfect for apps (Word, PPT). Your mic will handle the audio.
  • Entire Screen: Records everything. Good for switching between apps.
  • Browser Tab: Best if you need high-quality computer sound (like a YouTube video). Check "Share tab audio".

3. It's OK to Minimize!

Once recording starts, you can safely minimize this GrabScreen tab. We will keep recording in the background.

Setup Screen + Cam

Select the sharing mode that fits your goal.

Keep this tab open! To prevent your webcam from freezing, the GrabScreen tab must remain active while you record other apps.
BEST FOR APPS

Entire Screen

Captures everything. Best for switching between apps (PPT, Excel, Code) and showing your taskbar.

Check "Share system audio" in the next popup to record computer sound.

Browser Tab

Captures one specific tab. Best for reaction videos, YouTube, or online documents.
